Are your fragrances all natural?

Our fragrances are formulated with a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients. They are manufactured in Australia by our local expert perfumers. All of our fragrances abide by the safety standards set by the International Fragrance Regulation Association (IFRA), and they are phthalate-free and paraben-free.All-natural fragrances are certainly available, but only in a very limited range.

So why not just use essential oils? Often perceived as harmless because they are ‘natural’, essential oils can be dangerous if not used with care and knowledge. It is difficult and prohibitively expensive (and often not safe) to achieve an effectively scented candle or diffuser using only essential oils, and mixing up your own home blend of essential oils is certainly not something that we think anyone should do!

A fine fragrance is a symphony of ingredients, both natural and synthetic, designed and formulated by expert perfumers who do so with safety and beauty in mind.

Aren't synthetic ingredients bad?

No. Synthetic ingredients are molecules, just as natural fragrances from essential oils are molecules. Because they are ‘synthetic’ does not mean that they are simply bad or harmful. It does not simply mean that they are made from petroleums or plastics. It is important to note that essential oils can be harmful when used without proper knowledge and care. What matters is that fragrance is created and used responsibly and safely.

Synthetic ingredients in perfumery are a source of popular controversy and concern, but largely misunderstood. It is important to understand that natural ingredients, like synthetic ones, are chemical complexes.

Synthetic ingredients can have many benefits in perfumery. They can be more cost effective and have a far lower environmental impact than all-natural ingredients. They offer stability and consistency of quality and performance and allergy-free and cruelty-free alternatives. Plus, they give perfumers the creative freedom to produce fragrances with exceptional complexity, potency and longevity. Scents can now be produced with levels of knowledge, safety and integrity that were once impossible. For example, the rich and luxurious scent of ‘leather’ can now be achieved with birch tar, while ambroxide, created through a process that involves synthesising clary sage in a laboratory, mimics the note known as ambergris. Used as a perfume fixative, ambergris was once, horribly, harvested from whales.

Citrus notes, vanilla notes, and amber notes can be also be simulated in the laboratory more efficiently and achieve a more pleasing olfactory result than if derived from nature alone.

Fragrances created with only natural ingredients simply cannot achieve the quality, integrity and olfactory range of perfumes made with a masterly combination of both natural and synthetic materials. The craftsmanship of our perfumers deserves a nod.

Are your candles made of pure soy wax?

Our candles are created with a blend of soy and coconut wax. The addition of coconut wax produces are better-performing candle than soy alone. Coconut wax allows the candle to burn and set smoothly, without the problem of tunnelling or hang-ups on the side of the vessel, which means that you can enjoy all of your candle.

The magic of coconut wax is its capacity to maximise fragrance throw. You will notice that your candle smells amazing even when it is not lit. This is called cold throw or CT, and from our point of view this is the mark of a superior candle.

In some cases, a pure soy wax is a good choice, and occasionally you will find a pure soy candle in our range. Because soy is a harder wax, it can a good choice in finer glass vessels. This is because it produces a slower and slightly cooler burn. The combination of wax and vessel and fragrance is something that we select and test on a case-by-case basis to produce top-quality hand-poured candles.
